Former Lib Dem MSP John Farquhar Munro – who served as MSP for Ross, Skye and Inverness West from 1999 until stepping down at the end of the last Parliament in March 2011 – is supporting Alex Salmond for a second term as First Minister of Scotland.
Mr Munro sent the following message of support to Mr Salmond:
“I am delighted to support Alex Salmond for a second term for First Minister of Scotland in the Scottish Parliament. I have known Alex Salmond for several years and have come to appreciate his political acumen, his debating skills, and his devotion to Scotland.
“I consider Alex Salmond is the only one who can lead us through the next session of Parliament ensuring a more prosperous and sustainable future, and that is why I'm pleased to support Alex Salmond as the First Minister for Scotland in the next Parliament.”
Mr Salmond, who is campaigning today in current Lib Dem seats in the Highlands – including Caithness, Sutherland & Ross and Skye, Lochaber & Badenoch - welcomed Mr Munro’s support. He said:
“John Farquhar Munro is hugely respected, and has an outstanding record as a selfless champion of his constituency over 12 years, the needs of the Highlands, and Scotland’s national interests. I greatly value John’s opinion. This is a personal endorsement, but he speaks for many across the Highlands of Scotland.”
Adding his comment, SNP Candidate for Banffshire and Buchan Coast Stewart Stevenson, said:
"This backs up what we are finding on the doorstep in the North East. Previous Lib Dem voters are finding a new home with the SNP.
"Going in with the Tories at Westminster has been the final straw for many. They realise, as increasing numbers of Scottish electors do, that serious times mean that we need serious political leadership in Scotland. And that means supporting Alex Salmond and his team."
